UB_Stacked | NYSDOH Medicaid Initiatives

In 2006, the New York State Department of Health Medicaid Services established a partnership with the State University of New York.  One of the primary areas of the NYSDOH initiative is with the University at Buffalo in the area of pharmacy to provide an evidence based, non-commercial source of the latest objective information regarding pharmaceuticals in order to improve the quality of health care delivery to Medicaid beneficiaries.

Over the past 14 years, the UB NYS DOH Medicaid partnership team conducts prospective drug utilization as clinical reviews of selected drugs and drug classes coupled with claims analysis providing reports to the NYS Medicaid DUR Board with recommendations for clinically appropriate and cost-effective prescribing.  In addition, conducting retrospective drug utilization reviews of NYS Medicaid recipients providing feedback to NYSDOH to improve therapeutic criteria selection.

The Medicaid Prescriber Education Program is another component of this initiative to promote better health outcomes for the NYS Medicaid population by providing evidence-based and best practice accredited continuing education activities to prescribers.

The NYS DOH partnership with the University at Buffalo brings teaching and research expertise in the areas of drug information, drug utilization, pharmacoeconomics, analysis, and education.
